Fairport, NY (WROC) — Congratulations to this week’s Golden Apple winner, David Dunn!
Dan is the principal of Martha Brown Middle School in Fairport. Once attending school, he plans to retire in June of this year after a 45-year career.
Dan has held various positions over the years, but if you ask him, you’ll say that his favorite role was the principal.
“It’s not just part of a department or team, it’s just going in and out of all the different classrooms, interacting with staff and kids, and being part of everything,” Dan said. “I enjoyed responsibility, support, and love I received.”
Often seen walking through the hall with a smile, his infamous bucket hat, Dan, has become a staple of the Martha Brown community and inspires students and parents.
“He is very kind, compassionate, generous and has dedicated his life to us,” said Kathryn Hoffman, a second-year middle school student. “He’s always around the school, connecting and helping everyone.”
Hoffman’s dad, Jeff, recently joined his daughter on a school trip to Washington, DC. There he saw first-hand how wonderful Dan was.
“He didn’t get in the way to make sure he admitted all the veterans there. He wanted to hear them, wave their hands and thank them for their service. In fact, he was involved with the children, “Hoffman said. “The smile when the veterans left was absolutely precious.”
Hoffman added that Dan was involved with students throughout the trip, buying sweatshirts for classmates who couldn’t achieve it because of COVID, and donating money to a street music group along the way.
“These are just a few examples of what I have witnessed in three days. I can imagine how much his compassion, generosity, love for students, communities, family and colleagues is. He 45. I’ve had years of education, “Hoffman said.
The Hoffmans wanted to win the Golden Apple Award through News 8 for everything Dan did for the community. The surprise invited Dan to tears.
“Wow. Telling you how proud I am, how honored I am, and how lucky I have been working in such a wonderful district with such wonderful people for a long time. I can’t, “Dan said. “I wrote in my retirement letter, I don’t think I worked a day in my life, and I honestly believe it.”
This award is a sign of gratitude to those who have made a great contribution to the people around them.
“Thank you everyone. This is a wonderful moment in my life,” said Dan. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”
Congratulations on your wonderful career, Dan! Thank you for everything you have done for our community. Enjoy retirement.
